Getting started

Make the change

Start with a little.

The published guide recommends beginning with a handful in each feed and introducing Alkapellet slowly over two weeks.

Build towards the right amount.

The existing guide gives 2–3 Alkapellet scoops per feed for a 500kg horse. One Alkapellet scoop holds two metric cups. Use the current bag label, and confirm the amount against your horse’s weight, workload and whole ration.

Review the whole feed bucket.

The guide suggests reducing the chaff portion when incorporating Alkapellet. Do not automatically cut the total forage your horse needs. Ask your nutritionist how the product fits within a balanced ration.

Keep the routine practical.

Alkapellet may be soaked and crumbled through feed. Keep fresh water and suitable forage available. Store the bag under cover in a cool, dry place below 30°C.

Persistent changes need the right advice.

A feed product is not a treatment for disease. Contact your veterinarian about persistent diarrhoea, weight loss, appetite changes or discomfort. Suspected colic needs prompt veterinary attention.

It also notes that naturally occurring seeds may be present in feeds containing chaff or grain and may contain substances that affect swab results.
